USDA Approved Plastic Materials
— USDA Approved Plastic MaterialsUSDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) has jurisdiction over equipment used in federally inspected meat and poultry processing plants, and over packaging materials used for such products. Materials used in this equipment are approved on an individual basis. Determining suitability for use of components and the materials from which they are made is the responsibility of the equipment manufacturer.
The USDA Food and Safety and Inspection Service regulates manufacturing, packaging and handling practices in the agricultural food industry. Historically, the USDA reviewed material composition and issued "letters of no objection" for materials deemed to be chemically acceptable for their intended application. This protocol is no longer practiced. For further information on USDA regulations, contact U.S. Department of Agriculture, Compounds and Packaging Branch, Product Assessment Division, Building 306 BARC-East, Beltsville, MD 20705. By phone; (301)504-8566.
